The Sargent Shriver Center for Faith in Action is a new center flowing out of and enhancing the existing work of Don Bosco Cristo Rey.

Our Mission

The mission of the Sargent Shriver Center for Faith and Action (SSCFA) is to form good people for good work in the world through Catholic faith in action as modeled in the life and legacy of Sargent Shriver.

In practice, this looks like forming “A Good…”

“America needs schools able to develop values within the minds and hearts of our young people. We need to heighten and sharpen the moral consciousness of students. We need to establish and assert moral standards. We need to work for the day when a person’s moral IQ will be as important as his or her mental IQ. And to achieve these objectives Catholic schools should be the best equipped and most highly motivated of all.”

- Sargent Shriver
(in an address to the National Catholic Education Association on April 25, 1975)

FAQ

The core objectives of our first year of operation are focused on three areas: service, leadership development, and curriculum integration.

Shriver Service Corps

The Shriver Service Corps is the service arm of the SSCFA, putting faith in action and forming good people for good work in the world. The Service Corps serve both abroad and at home, partnering with organizations and initiatives to serve the common good.

Having just completed our first international service trip to El Salvador in Summer 2026, our Center is preparing for our inaugural Sargent Shriver Day on October 23rd, when our entire school will go out into the community to serve with our partner organizations.

Leadership Development

Furthering the legacy of Sargent Shriver involves forming servant leaders who work for peace and justice. The Center is focused upon strengthening our existing and emerging leaders at the school by offering training and mentorship throughout the school year. Through our partnership with Spark the Wave, we are forming our student body leadership to impact the world through a lifelong commitment to community service. In addition, we are operating our inaugural Shriver Speech Contest, giving students the opportunity to grow into effective public communicators.

Curriculum Integration

The goal of Curriculum Integration and Experiential Learning Experience grants through the SSCFA is to utilize both classroom and field trip time to integrate Catholic faith principles into each subject area through the “faith in action” witness of the life and legacy of Sargent Shriver. Sarge addressed numerous concerns in the world both in word and deed, including racism, poverty, unemployment, education, human formation, marriage and family stability, peacemaking, denuclearization, work, science, law, and more. In the words of Dr. Jamie Price, a scholar of Shriver: “Sarge is a rather like salt: he goes well with lots and lots of things.”

The SSCFA want to help our educators utilize the abundant resources of Sarge’s work to “sprinkle this salt” on every subject area at Don Bosco Cristo Rey and provide the resources to make their creative ideas a reality. In so doing, we hope to integrate all of our educational aims towards a common goal of human formation: good people for good work in the world.
